New Year Artworks

Happy New Year! Another year have passed, putting all the past behind. And a new year of 2024 have came, bringing fresh beginnings for everyone! Let’s take a look at some of the artworks inspired by the new year. The Guardian have put some artworks from the past to inspire people for a new year resolution, wishing for a change in 2024.

Firstly, Thomas Gainsborough’s artwork, “Daughters Chasing the Butterfly”. Gainsborough’s much-loved painting of his daughters Mary, aged six, and Margaret, aged four or so, shows the girls breezily tripping forward after the elusive butterfly. But the day is passing. The wood is dark, a storm seems to be gathering, perhaps even dusk, and though these little bodies are moving fast, the faces are more anxious and static. Carpe diem. Childhood is brief, ephemeral as a butterfly and will pass parents by if they do not pay attention. In 2024, hoping more people can spend time with their family.

Second, Horror at Home, by Damien Hirst is a photograph capturing the afterwards of smoking. This is a scene from an Alan Carr session when the smokers are horrified to see the buildup of butts and continue to puff while stubbing out their cigarettes in ashtrays that are overflowing. This photograph, aims to spread the negative influence of smoking, hoping that in the new year, more people will stop smoking.
