Interview with Ms. Ting Ma

Introduction

Ms. Ting Ma is a Chinese teacher at SMIC school. She teaches 4th grade and 6th grade Chinese, as well as Chinese Multimedia for high school students. In this interview, she talks about her background, as well as some of her favorite cuisines.

Q & A

Q: Where are you from and when did you move to Shanghai? Why?

A: I’m from Sichuan! I moved to Shanghai in 2001 for college.

Q: How many years have you lived in Shanghai?

A: I’ve lived in Shanghai for 17 years. I moved back to Sichuan for 4 years at the 16-year-mark, but I returned to Shanghai this year. That makes a total of 17 years!

Q: What is your favorite food from our hometown?

A: It’s really difficult to say what my favorite food from my hometown is, since all the food there is amazing. However, if I had to choose one, it would be boiled fished with pickled cabbage and chili.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant from your hometown?

A: My favorite restaurant from my home-town is called “Cuttlefish Fillet Hotpot.”

Q: What is your favorite Shanghainese dish?

A: My favorite Shanghainese dish is bamboo shoot soup with fresh and pickled streaky pork.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Shanghai?

A: My favorite restaurant in Shanghai is Chuan Hong. They sell Sichuan food there.

Q: What is the most unique food you’ve seen in Shanghai? Do you like it or not?

A: The most unique food I’ve had in Shanghai is drunken crabs. I really don’t like this, because my stomach always feels awful after having this dish.
