Badminton seasons starts with a tryout record attendance

As we head into the second quarter, another season of sports is about to begin. Sports like basketball, vollyeball and soccer are usually regarded as the most popular, but another sport is beginning to rise through the ranks. It is time for the badminton team to step into the spotlight.

The badminton season is just around the corner, and students of all ages attended the badminton tryouts, hoping to play for either the Varsity or JV team. This year’s turnout stood out compared to attendance in the last few seasons. Usually there would be around 40 students that participated, and there were limited spots available on the team. This year, however, a total of 62 participants attended the tryouts. In response to this massive increase in attendance, the coaches and captains are considering the possibility of increasing the number of available spots on the team.

This year’s captains Kevin Zhou (12C) and Olivia Lu (12C) are ready to lead the team through the season. They were filled with joy, watching the participants display their enthusiasm for the sport. “I felt really happy and proud at the same time [seeing so many participants]… I hope that this year, both teams can aim for at least 3rd place…[and] bring back trophies for the school,” Olivia stated. When asked about the team’s ambitions, Kevin said, “I want to leave a tradtion and keep first place in the Junior Varsity tournament. I also want to get at least 2nd place in the Varsity tournament [this year].”

After completing the tryouts, several students expressed their opinions on the upcoming badminton season. Arthur Kim (9A) stated, “[Though] the tryouts weren’t as hard as I expected… I hope to get to know more people on the team… [and] get better.” Similar to arthur, Oscar Su (10B) was confident in his chances of getting into the team. “The tryout was very competitive, [but] I believe I’ll still get in because I left a good impression [on the coach]. My goal is to have fun, and put our heart [into] this sport.”

There is a lot of hope for this year’s badminton team. Many people are expecting the badminton team to give their best and to get a result that satisfies everyone.
