Junior Varsity Girls see their best game yet in slamming victory against NAIS

On December 12th, 2017, the Junior Varsity Girls Basketball Team surprised their coaches with a spectacular 28-8 win, defeating NAIS (Nord Anglia International School of Shanghai). Unlike the previous games where one player led the others, “all of our players steered each other, backing each other, and went for the shot”, Assistant Coach Roy McMaster happily commented.

During the one-hour trip to NAIS, the Junior Varsity Girls Team voiced their concerns up against an aggressive NAIS Team. Marilyn Sun (10C) claimed, “According to the coaches, this game could be a difficult one, but we have pretty good players this year. I believe this game would be a challenging game that could strengthen our team.”

However, as soon as they tipped off, the JV Girls Team went from worried players to fierce animals.

“Defense!” a confident Nina Liao (9A) yelled on the court. As the team heated up, players on the bench screamed out words of encouragement, and the coaches offered advice. “Two hands! Yes, that’s what we want,” exclaimed Coach Patrick McCann. The first quarter ended with the Sharks in the lead by 4 points. By the time the second quarter ended, the Junior Varsity Girls broke out in a 9 point lead, with the score at 15-6 with 4:46 left. Before the second half began, Coach McCann reassured the team of their great work, and reminded them that, “keeping quick passes between each other is key.”

During the second half of the game, the Junior Varsity girls pulled away rapidly, resulting in a 20-point lead. When Tirzah Zhu (CT8B) made a three-pointer, our team roared with extreme alacrity. “She’s an animal,” agreed Mr. McMaster and Coach McCann.

At the end, Mr. McMaster gushed, “Today’s game was the best overall game as a team effort. We distributed the points evenly, and it was our best game so far. So we got one more game [in] Concordia and let’s see how we can handle that.” The players themselves seemed satisfied with their increased communication and teamwork. Angela Tan (10A) recalled that “Everyone contributed, making this our best game so far!” Tirzah also added that she was proud about “… being able to support other teammates and improve [her] dribbling skills by going against a tough team.”

Great job, Lady Sharks!
