Lady Sharks view loss as chance for improvement

On March 13th, 2018, the Varsity Girls Soccer team played their first away game of the season. Though traveling to WCPD (Wellington College, Pudong) was really a nice opportunity for the girls, there were some disadvantages that the Lady Sharks faced during preparations and the game. All players are given time to warm up before starting the game. However, according to Coach Raydan Phillips, this time “we were not able to warm up properly” and the game started immediately after the SMIC-I team arrived at WCPD. Not only that but, according to Karin Tan (11A), “The sun was extraordinarily bright and our team, unfortunately, got the side facing the sun in the first half, resulting with issues.” Due to these reasons, the girls’ varsity team was not able to show their fullest potential during the game.

After the first 5 goals were scored by WCPD players, Karin Tan made the first goal of the Lady Shark season. The moment that Karin made the goal, the team rejoiced with excited cheers. In that brief moment, the team members gained renewed hope for a win, and the atmosphere quickly changed. Through Karin’s goal, the girls were able to build their teamwork to another level during the game.

Nevertheless, SMIC-I was defeated by WCPD 6-1. But the girls are not letting it give them cold feet. “This game is a stepping tool toward our goal of becoming more of a team and working together,” Coach Phillips said. Without getting discouraged, the team is working hard not to make mistakes that they had made in this previous game. Even though they lost, the team is still confident in their ability. “Our team has more potential to strive for the best,” added Karin.

Although the first game of the season did not end up with a good result, by learning through experience in this game, players improved both physically and mentally. Please cheer them up by sending your support to our SMIC-I Girls Varsity team!
