Sharks’ Season Episode 2: Volleyball Girls
Episode 2 – volleyball girls
introduction
Chloe- Welcome back to Sharks’ news! We have Kelly and Sarah with us again today!
Kelly- Hello everyone!
Sarah- Hello!
Chloe- Season 1 News will be about SMIC sports in 2023. We will have a total of 3 episodes and today we will be discussing volleyball girls. In the next episode, we will be discussing volleyball boys.
start
Kelly- It is well known to SMIC students that season 1 always starts with volleyball! Students had been practicing even before school started. How hard working!
Sarah-This season we had a new coach! He is a Smic alumni that won the D1 Championships for SMIC volleyball in 2018, his goal was for the girls to make it to the cup tournament
Sarah -Preseason for the girls started on august 28, even before school started! They did some ab training and weightlifting, all to strengthen their core and make sure that they are not just players but athletes *insert video
Chloe-The girls won their first game against Dulwich on 9/18, 3 to 0
Sarah- Wow that’s impressive!
Kelly-I heard daily practices were made fun with coaches in shark onesies playing against the whole girls team 1 v 6

Kelly- However, when losing a game, the coaches would punish the girls by letting them do gruesome conditioning workouts. Many funny videos were taken of the painful faces that the girls made when doing these punishments.

Chloe-Practice was all going great when suddenly one of the players twisted her ankle. The ankle bloated up immediately and she was unable to play the following games. Many other players hurt their wrists as well, putting the team in a critical situation.
Sarah-That’s very unfortunate, but luckily, their coach, who just happens to be a physical therapist, helped the girls to some rest, and the players were healed soon. *insert picture
Chloe: The tournament happened on 10/28, and the varsity girls successfully got into the cup tournament, or the tournament between the top 8 in shanghai. They won their first game making them top 4 in shanghai.
Sarah: Even though they had won their first game, the varsity girls lost their last game for 1:2 and got a third place.
Kelly: We hope that next year they can be SISAC Champions!! *insert video (S-H-A-R-K)
Chloe: Next, on the junior varsity girls!
Kelly: This year, we had a surprising amount of new players that showed up to tryouts!
Sarah: At the beginning of the season, jv girls lacked teamwork, communication, and enthusiasm.
Kelly- Everyone was awkward with each other and had very little confidence in their volleyball skills, But, with the coach’s assistance and captain’s support, JV girls were able to make some notable improvements as a team and as an individual as well.
Sarah: Now let’s talk about how the girls did on their games. For the first 2 games, it went pretty well. Although the girls were very nervous at pre-season, they brought their first victory against SAS. Through this, they gained a lot of confidence and started building more teamwork.
Kelly- That’s right. I also went to cheer on the girls in the first game! Although they seemed nervous, their play was amazing. I even saw some improvements throughout the game itself.
Sarah- However, the mid season did not go too great. Few members were busy due to schoolwork so there were people who did not attend the practice frequently. And the following games against Concordia, Dulwhich, and Wellington all brought some bitter losts for the girls which enabled them to make it to the cups but competed with the teams that placed 5-8.
(Interview with one of the girl in jv and ask about how they felt and what they planned to do when they lost these games)
Questions:
How did you feel when the jv team lost the game between Concordia, Dulwhich, and Wellington?
Did the loss of these games make you want to give up or encourage the team to work harder?
Did the team make any changes for example changes on the specific ways of training, communication with the team, and ways to improve teamwork?
Kelly- Yes, we can see that due to their loss in the games, the girls didn’t get to compete with the top 4 teams, but the coaches and the girls did not give up. They reflected on their mistakes and started to come to practices more frequently. The girls set a new goal to make it top 3 in the plate.
Sarah- finally, through their hard efforts, jv girls ended their season winning a 2nd place in the plate tournament!
Chloe: Wow that is quite a story, that is good news to hear!
Sarah: That’s a very impressive accomplishment! *insert photo of jv girls
