Senior privilege

Seniors are less than a month away from graduation now. Our school has a privilege that is only given to high school seniors, allowing them to go eat lunch outside the school. Mrs. Bates gave a presentation in the auditorium to explain the rules seniors must abide by in order to enjoy this privilege:

• Must wear your school uniform on Monday to be able to go to lunch that week.

• You can’t be tardy or miss any morning periods to go to lunch.

• You can’t be late to 6th period.

• You can only go twice a week.

• The day you choose to go out, you pick up your picture from B119 by the end of 2nd period.

• You show the guard your picture to leave when walking through the MHS gate.

• When you come back, you give the guard your picture.

Overall, the students have a good opinion of the senior privilege. “I feel that it’s a nice way for seniors to buy food and enjoy their lunch period” said Jacqueline Shen (12B) and “It’s nice that we’re able to have a quick break from school and enjoy lunch with friends,” said Erica Cheng (12B). Seniors said that the privilege they were given was like an award for all the work they have done up until now.

However, there were some students who came up with complaints about this year’s senior privilege system. “I think that the school should implement senior privilege earlier in the beginning of second semester or the third quarter so that the seniors can actually have a chance to use it,” said Jacqueline Shen (12B). This year, senior privileges were given exceptionally late compared to other years and because of this, the students complained about how they didn’t really have much time to go out and enjoy their senior privilege.

Also, because there were some issues about students violating the lunch delivery rule, the school has set up aforementioned complicated rules for the seniors to exercise the privileges. Therefore, some students, like Erica Cheng (12B), said “There are too many strings attached for simply going out to lunch.”

Students wish next year’s senior privileges will be given earlier in the year so they can be enjoyed in a leisurely manner.
