Professional Magician Performs at SMIC

On October 29th, 2018, SMIC-I alumnus and Grand Prix champion, Eric Chien, came to present a magnificent magic show in the first-floor auditorium. Chien began his show with a short introduction of himself: he attended a college in Hong Kong after graduating from SMIC-I, but dropped out to pursue his interest in magic. He then began his show with a demonstration of his speed in solving a Rubik’s cube, trying to beat his record of 20 seconds. Gradually, Chien began to perform different tricks in solving the Rubik’s cube while adding humor in his commentaries, exciting and engaging the audience. Eric’s assistant then came on to the stage to show his skill in entertaining the audience not only through his magic skills, but also his usage of words. Then after his assistant performed his opening act, Chien came on again to perform his last trick, the winning act of the FISM World Championship of Magic. At the end of the jaw-opening show, there was a big applause from the audience, who were still in shock from the performance. As Mr. Dewayne Jones stated, “Honestly, I think it was magical… It was indeed a once in a lifetime opportunity [to see his show].”

Starting from his sophomore year, Chien began his journey in the field of magic. Though there were many tough times for him, but he never stopped trying. Chien stated, “I never thought about quitting… even though I [had] times where I’ve [stumbled], I just picked myself up and continued.” Chien started out as a street magician, practicing and learning more and more magic until he finally released his first Magic Product in 2016, and became the Grand Prix champion of the FISM World Champion of Magic in 2018. After gaining much knowledge in this field, Chien provided advice for the students, “It’s very important to have a have a goal, and to always believe you can achieve it.”

The visit from Chien was a great experience for both the students and the teachers. Not only was it mind-blowing to see such a performance, it was also a good opportunity for the students to learn a few tips about life after high school and potential future careers.
