MUN members visit to the largest and most official annual conference in Singapore
From November 18 to 24, the members from the SMIC-I MUN attended the THIMUN XIV, a five-day simulation of the United Nations committee in Singapore. THIMUN, also known as “The Hague International Model United Nations,” is one of the largest and most international MUN conferences in the world. This organization was founded as a local conference in Hague, a city in the Netherlands, in 1968. In these decades this foundation has grown immensely and has gained reputation in the worldwide MUN community.
There are three main roles for all of the applicants: secretariat, who overlook the conference logistics, student officers, who are responsible for leading the committees, and delegates. Only a handful of participants play the role of secretariat and student officers; most of the participants are delegates in THIMUN.
Applicants from all over the world discuss various topics, mostly related to global issues and diplomacy, and collaborate with each other to propose resolutions. During the conference, the delegates vet and give suggestions to the proposals of the teams.
Since last year, the SMIC-I MUN began to plan their participation in the THIMUN. To spread the school’s MUN program to the world community, Jessica Choi, an alumni from class of 2018 and the previous president of the MUN club, proposed the visit to Singapore. The president for this school year, Timothy Lin, made the wish come true by undergoing the application process for THIMUN Singapore this school year.
“Our club has always hoped our MUN program could become internationally known. Being able to attend THIMUN Singapore, one of the world’s largest MUN conferences, is [helping] us accomplish our goal,” said Apple Chang (10B), a member of the SMIC-I MUN.
She also stated that even though she was a little scared in the beginning, she is glad to have an opportunity to visit Singapore and participate in the THIMUN conferences.
“There, I [can] make friends from various places around the world. Given another chance, I will definitely want to go to Singapore again,” commented Apple.
At the end, Apple expressed her love to SMIC-I MUN, “I feel that SMIC-I MUN is an awesome club. The people in the club are very nice and helpful. MUN has taught me a lot and improved my research skills and also public speaking abilities. Overall, I love our club, and I appreciate it.”
