Young minds are building new devices that could possibly change our future
The Elementary School Science Fair had so many inventions that there were more than teachers could count. On January 3rd, the SMIC Elementary 4th and 5th graders showed off their inventions, contraptions, and devices to help solve modern-day problems. There were so many creative projects. Students made more effective sleeping cabinets with luggage storage. One fun and interesting invention was an umbrella attached to the back of a backpack, which shields the owner from the rain without having to hold the umbrella. Another invention that could possibly help solve many problems concerning lockers and cubbies was a briefcase that could hold not only papers, but had its own different compartments for writing utensils, notebooks, and papers.
Student and teacher judges were able to go around volunteering and scoring the projects. There were several categories like the following: Problem Solving I and II, Novelty, Appeal, and Usefulness. Judges then talked with the students to learn about their project so they could score accordingly. Students were given a score ranging from 5 being Expert Inventor to 1 being Beginner Inventor.
The kids had an amazing time building their inventions are coming up with ways they could possibly improve or change today’s society. Judges were also given an amazing opportunity to see all these amazing creations. Judges also had the wonderful oppurtunity to engage with the students and learn about their inventions. These children have focused on problems that we ignore in everyday life, but when you see someone else put it out to you, especially a child, it opens up your mind to the countless little matters that if they were fixed, life would be a much simpler task.
The students’ creativity is beyond what most people can imagine, because as little children their minds are open to infinite amount of possibilities that could be made possible in this world. They have the determination and grit to make this invention and solve this problem, because as spectators could see, the students put in a lot of time and effort into making their inventions.
If these little children can build such contraptions, many of us can too. Who knows? Maybe one of the children will grow up to build the next big thing of this age. Inspire others to think differently!
