Varsity Girls start the season victoriously

On November 15^th, 2017, the Varsity Girls Basketball Team played their first home game of the season, defeating NAIS (Nord Anglia International Shanghai) in a stunning 32-28 victory. The team appeared to be gelling nicely, especially considering that most of the members are new. “We played pretty well at the first league game with a completely new team,” remarked Sydney Lin (12C).

Our Lady Sharks started off in a neck and neck battle, with lead change after lead change. Although Co-captain Sophie Chao (11C) led beautifully organized fast breaks with a dazzling array of layups and assists, the other team managed to score on a collection of contested jumpers. “We were very close with the points in the first two quarters,” commented Sydney.

After halftime, the Lady Sharks hustled right out of the gate with renewed vigor. “We worked really hard,” said Esther Tak (10). “We kind of struggled during the game but we fought together for [the win].” Coupled with 3-point bombs from Sophie and strong rebounding from Esther, our girls quickly began to pull away. “In the second half, we started leading by more and more points and ended up winning!” exclaimed Sydney. The team capitalized on the opportunity by limiting turnovers and playing at a fast pace. “We fought off our anxiety and utilized our plays with few turnovers, which is a great improvement,” Sophie said.

Coach Jeffrey Martinez also looked on the first game quite positively. “It was a confidence builder,” he said.

The team is already looking forward to their next game and planning its improvements. “I’m very proud and looking forward for upcoming games,” said Esther. This year’s Lady Sharks seem to be a rigorous machine that will out-hustle their opponents for wins. “No matter what the results are, the most important thing is that we fought hard and played our best,” said Co-captain Victoria Liu (12A). “Our goal is to improve as a team, win as a team.”
