Students have a blast at Sports Day
On Friday, October 12th, students from all grades came together to enjoy SMIC-I’s annual Sports Day, competing in different sports such as races of varying distances, high and long jumps, and the overhead throw. Numerous changes were applied to this year’s edition of Sports Day, which left students with high expectations for the event.
Sports Day was greeted by some of the schools’ most enthusiastic people. People of all ages were more than ready to enjoy their day participating in the events. Last year was somewhat disappointing due to problems with the schedule. For example, some people had to skip their races because the timing of the races overlapped. Another example of poor organization was when less than three people were running in a race. However, this year was very different; everything was organized well, and everyone had a chance to participate. Before the event, Esther Kim (4A) said, “This year’s Sports Day is more exciting because I have [a greater] chance [of winning]… but there will also be a challenge from the new students.”
Along with their renewed energy, students also challenged themselves to excel during their performances at Sports Day. Though winning medals was the goal of several runners, merely running and having fun with friends was something to look forward to as well. Chester Poon (10C), before running the 800-meter race and 100-meter relay, said, “I do wish [to] win a gold medal…[though] the medal [doesn’t] matter. It’s all about having fun and running.” The new students were very competitive, which motivated everyone to win the gold medal. Before running the 100-meter dash, Junzhe Koh (8B) said, “It would be good to win [a gold medal], but there is tough competition from one of the new students.”
Junzhe was able to receive a gold medal in both the 100-meter dash and the 400 meter race. David Kim (9B) and Arthur Kim (9A) were able to dominate the gold medals in the 9th grade races, while Alan Wu (12A) showed his monstrous speed in the 800 meter race for the high-school races.
This year’s Sports Day was an excellent experience for everyone, including faculty members. Students were not only competing for personal recognition, but they were also enjoying the experience of participating in their events with their friends. Hopefully, next year’s edition will be able to improve on this year’s quality.
