Sports Day provides welcome half-day for students
On Friday, October 13th, the annual SMIC Private School Sports Day was held once again near the MHS track. Both middle school and high school students from the Chinese Track and SMIC-I participated in a variety of events, which included the track runs, overhead throw, and a variety of different jumps. The day was topped off with a competitive relay run between the different homerooms of each grade. “I’m really happy that our homeroom won this year,” said Albert Tan-Mulligan (12B), “Thanks to the homeroom switches this year, we finally beat the homeroom that’s won the last three years.”
This year, SMIC-I competitors won 198 medals combined (out of a possible 250). “English track won [about] 200 medals, so that’s pretty good,” said Tony Sim (10C), “WE WON 200 MEDALS!”
Like previous Sports Days, clubs were also granted the opportunity to promote and sell food and drinks. One student was grateful for the refreshments clubs provided at Sports Day. “I enjoyed having drinks at Sports Day,” said Patrick Du (11B), “It allowed me to be forgetful and it is nice to have that kind of security”.
However, as events weren’t mandatory this year, some students took advantage of the opportunity to participate in their own “events”. “We didn’t need to go to any events, so me and my friends just took the opportunity to play [basket]ball on the outside court for like two hours,” said Tiger Ko (11B). Others prepared for an upcoming volleyball tournament. “I wasn’t [near the track] half the time,” said Stephanie Chen (12B), “I went to play volleyball, then ran [the relay], then went to play volleyball again.”
Even if students weren’t able to participate in events, many still had fun and were productive. “I helped out my P.E. teacher,” said Tony, “and I made sure everyone in our class went to their events.” Sports Day once again allowed some students to participate in physical activity and all students to enjoy a half-day off.
