Sophie Chao smashes shooting record in win over Dulwich

On December 6th, 2017, Sophie Chao (11C) scored an astounding 49 points in the Varsity Girls win over Dulwich College. The 49 points not only marked a career high for Sophie, but also skyrocketed past the previous school record (league record unclear since it doesn’t keep these stats). She also tallied 9 Stephen Curry-esque three pointers–also a career high.

Ever the team player, Sophie attributed her success to her teammates. “I feel like the reason I scored so much was because my teammates kept screening for me,” Sophie said. “Last night’s game was too magical.”

Needless to say, Sophie’s career game amazed the crowd. “After knowing Sophie this long I thought there was nothing that could surprise me anymore; she’s incredible!” praised Activities and Athletics Director Mr. Brian Bates. “[That is] until tonight! when she dropped 49 points for a big win in the Shark Tank (with nine 3 pointers)!”

Mr. Bates and K-12 Safety Officer Mr. Mark Whiston had high praise for Sophie. “What made it good was that it was [a] very disciplined…performance,” he commented.  Mr. Bates and Mr. Whiston also complimented Sophie’s maturity as a player. “She wasn’t just jacking shots [and] ballhogging,” said Mr. Bates. “It was very true to the game and it happened within the flow of the game–very unselfishly.”

Looking ahead, Sophie knows that she and the team will perform even better than we’ve seen so far. “In the future, I believe we can play even better than last night’s game,” promised Sophie. “I’ll try to score 50 next time!”

Monday before we started practice, I told the Lady Sharks that we would win if they continued to play with the dedication to the team and to the game that they have shown since the season began. We did that. I pulled Sophie aside before tonight’s game and told her tonight is yours go out and have fun lead your team to victory and she did (49 points). I have never witnessed in all my years of coaching such a beautiful display of ability and humbleness. What can I say other than thank you Lady Sharks for letting me be a part of tonights victory.
