Phoebe Tuan performs at esteemed Carnegie Hall

Many of us who have dreams of getting into the entertainment industry are not often discovered until we are older, but one young girl has defied all odds. Our very own Phoebe Tuan (7B) was invited to play at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York on March 13th this year.

She had won first prize in the New York Golden Classical Music Award and was then sent an email where they asked for her to play at the Carnegie Hall. She revealed that, “I thought I would never be able to perform in such a historic hall and compete with the other competitors (who are in music schools) and win the competition.” She said that the experience was amazing because it not only allowed her to go see New York and travel around, but also encouraged her to try to refine her piano skills. “I felt strong and also very brave when I was performing, [though] I was actually nervous when I was waiting for my turn because I felt a little pressured at first,” Phoebe confessed.

Phoebe won the award for Best Beethoven Performance

Carnegie Hall, built by Andrew Carnegie, is one of the most influential concert venues in the world for classical and popular music. It has been host to several legendary musical performers, from jazz performers such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong to pop music bands and singers such as The Beatles and Judy Garland(Wikipedia). The hall has also been home to many lectures and lecturers from Mark Twain to Booker T. Washington (Carnegie Hall Official Website). Although this site has been overshadowed by many of the new concert venues around New York, it is still one of the most respected music venues around the world. Many sites say that being given the opportunity to play at Carnegie Hall meant that the person had reached the ultimate height of their career.

And for this, all of SMIC should be very proud of Phoebe Tuan’s accomplishments.
