What is mental health?

Knowing that mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood, adolescence and adulthood, what exactly is mental health? Mental health includes people’s emotional, psychological and social well-being. Although you may not realize its existence in your everyday life, it affects us in many ways. Mental health may affect the way we think, feel and behave. It can also help to determine how we deal with our stress, relate to other people and make choices when facing different situations.

Why is a good mental health necessary for a student?

According to a study done by Charles Darwin University, high levels of mental health are directly linked to improved student learning, creativity and productivity. In addition, if a student has constantly maintained a relatively high level of mental health, she may show more positive social relationships and physical health compare to others.

5 Tips for prioritizing mental health as a student

  1. Take breaks: taking regular breaks during daily study tasks can help reduce students’ stress and prevent burnout.
  2. Adequate sleep: there is no doubt that sleep is very crucial to a person’s mental health. Try to sleep 7-9 hours a day if possibe.
  3. Exercise regularly: exercise is a great way to reduce stress and improve a person’s mood. It is best for students to have at least 30 minutes of exercise time every week.
  4. Self-care: try to practice some self-care activities every day, such as listening to music, taking a bath, reading a book, etc. This can help relieve stress and make students feel relaxed.
  5. Outside help: know how to seek outside help when necessary. You can find a time to talk to your parents and friends about your stress, and ask them to give you some advice.
