Everyday really is Christmas with Sia’s new holiday album

“Hmmm…It’s kind of confusing if the [songs are] good or bad…I like the song itself, but sometimes, Sia’s voice interrupts me.” –Jacqueline Shen (11B).

Composed of 10 new songs, Sia’s new Christmas album, “Everyday is Christmas”, was released on November 18th. When I looked at the track list, I was surprised that among the 10 songs, five of them were all title songs. I believe that Sia was really confident with this album. Even though I partly agree with Jacqueline’s comment above, I have some slightly different views as well.

Before I started researching for this album, the only song that I knew of hers was “Chandelier”. However, when I listened to this Christmas album, I realized that Sia is a talented singer who can sing songs in several different genres. The songs in the album include fast tempo songs and slower ballads. The first song of the track, “Santa’s Coming For Us,” starts off slow but quickly changes in mood to a bright atmosphere. Also, many of the other songs are equally cheerful and flow quite smoothly. However, as the album is wrapping up towards its end, the 9th track, “Everyday is Christmas,” a romantic ballad song, gives the audience a warm, soft feeling. Personally I like “Everyday is Christmas” the best because I feel that it would be a really nice song to hear in Christmas Eve or Christmas before sleeping.

Despite the fact that I really enjoy this album, I do have one critique. Just like Jacqueline, I think in this album, there are particular songs that don’t seem to fit with Sia’s voice. For example, in songs like “Puppies Are Forever” or “Sunshine,” Sia’s unique voice doesn’t fit.

Except for just a couple songs, I believe that Sia’s first Holiday album, ‘Everyday is Christmas,’ is a perfect album to add to your holiday collection. Also if you want to learn more about Sia’s voice and her singing style, “this album distinctly shows who Sia is and what kind of music she wants to create. [This album is] very Sia-like, like a Christmas carol but not old.” said HyeWon Rha (9B)
