Enjoy swing in spring at Jazz Lincoln Center Shanghai
As citizens of Shanghai, you may all be familiar with the busy streets of East Nanjing road. Located just by the Bund, the area is packed with tourists looking to see the skyline, the antique hotels, or the sightseeing tunnel. Within this popular destination, however, hides a perfect spot for music and jazz lovers to spend a few hours: Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai.
Jazz at Lincoln Center’s headquarters (located in New York City) was founded in 1987 and has since been a site for Jazz musicians to share their talents and spread the beauty of this genre. For its 30th anniversary, the first branch Jazz club was launched here in Shanghai. Since their opening, performers have flown in from NYC to Shanghai 3 weeks at a time, hosting a show almost every single night.
Tickets for the shows are available on ticketing apps such as DaZhongDianPing and Gewara for 180 (outside area) and 220 (inside). Discounts of thirty percent off are offered for selective showtimes when two tickets are bought together. Due to the relatively small size of the venue, seating in the lower price range area resembles bar counters yet will not affect the overall experience. However, if you are hoping for a private table with your date, whether it be an actual date or friend, the 220 RMB ticket will do.
The coziness and the soothing lighting of the place make it a perfect destination for a special night out. Also keep in mind that though they offer a selection of dining options, it is advised that you eat something else beforehand if looking to save money. A minimum consumption fee of 100 RMB per person is charged. This amount only covers for the orders of a small dessert (highly recommend the lemon tart) and a drink, so if you are planning for dinner there, make sure you’ve got some money to spare.
As for the music itself, it’s almost quality-guaranteed. Many (if not all) performers that come to this Jazz Club has had experience playing in areas such as Harlem, where Jazz first flourished. You also get the opportunity to actually speak to these talented individuals after the performance if you have the bravery to initiate a conversation. The current theme of the Jazz Club is “Jazz in Spring”, and a total of four groups of musicians have and will be visiting. The Patrick Bartley Quartet and the Ladybugs as well as Benny Benack III Quartet and Alita Moses have already completed their three weeks here. From March 20th until April 8th, the Veronica Swift Quintet will take the stage followed by the Bruce Harris Quintet and Lucy Yeghiarzaryan from April 10th to 29th.
If you’re looking for a brand new experience, make sure you check out Jazz at Lincoln Center.
