CSC successfully hosts their annual Charity Fair and introduced a brand new event, the Walk-a-thon!

On March 29, Community Service Club (CSC) invited various SMIC-I school clubs and organizations in China to a Charity Fair to educate and promote social issues that continues to exist in today’s society.

“Let’s get ready! Please move all the desks and desks to the booths by 3:50 so that all clubs and organizations can be prepared before the students arrive!” instructed Mrs. Sharon Ma, the advisor of the CSC.

All organizations and clubs warmly welcomed the students, teachers, and parents. All the activities held had meaningful purposes. For instance, the CSC orphan group had an activity where the participant would be blindfolded, and the other participant would give directions for the blindfolded participant to find a way out in a small maze. Getting a chance to temporarily experience how difficult it is to live without sight, the participants were reminded again that they should keep in mind of the less fortunate, and how they can contribute to help them have an easier life. “I loved how the different organizations came to our school and talked about the events they host. Through Charity Fair, I hope there will be more people willing to be involved and also make a change,” said Ginny Choi (ET12A), the president of the CSC.

“[The Charity Fair] was satisfying and I also learned a lot. I liked the blindfold activity the most because I was actually able to experience a person who was visually impaired which let me feel the importance of eye sights and also hearing that let me find the way to finish,” commented Justina Kim (ET11A), “After participating, I learned ways to contribute to others that need help; for example, raising fund for local Shanghai high school students.”

Aside from Charity Fair, CSC also launched a new program. Inspired by the program called “Terry Fox Run” in Canada, the Walk-a-Thon was hosted this year on the SMIC-I campus field. With all the donations donated to the Shanghai Wheelchair Foundation to make wheelchairs, CSC aims to help those who are having difficulties with walking, running, and other physical activities. All of the students who participated in this event were granted a minimum of 2 hours of community hours, attracting many students to participate.

“Charity Fair this year was much more successful than last year. CSC was able to cover more social issues, and we had more charity organizations participating in this event,” stated Ginny. “We have faced some obstacles during the preparation. Since this is our second year hosting the Charity Fair, we had difficulties planning ahead. We also had to prepare Walk-a-thon for the first time, so there were more complications.”
