Bohemian Rhapsody is a biographical movie based on the legendary British rock band, Queen. The story focuses on the band’s rise to worldwide success and the life of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer, and it ends with a reenactment of Queen’s Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium. The movie is directed by Bryan Singer, and current Queen members, Brian May and Roger Taylor, worked as musical consultants. American actor, Rami Malek, portrays the main protagonist, Freddie Mercury.
The film begins with Freddie Mercury joining the rock band as a vocalist, which would eventually form into Queen. The band quickly garnered huge success both domestically and internationally. In particular, after Queen released their 4th album, A Night at the Opera, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” one of the songs on the album, received an overwhelming response when it was played on The Kenny Everett Video Show. However, as the band achieved more and more success, Freddie Mercury began to struggle with his sexuality, even though he was engaged to a woman named Mary Austin. He later began an affair with his manager, Paul Prenter. The movie then depicts Freddie Mercury’s conflicts with his band members, including Freddie’s affair and his decision to leave the band in favor of a solo career. Eventually, Freddie reconciled with his band members, and Queen performed together again for the Live Aid event at the Wembley Stadium in England.
Many people have commented that they were very emotional while watching the movie, and some admitting to have cried during the film. This is because this movie brought back so many memories of their childhood, especially their memories of Queen performing. This movie is also just as enjoyable for teenagers today to watch too. Bohemian Rhapsody is a recommended film for those who are interested in either rock music or the legendary band Queen!
