An Inspiration to Many

Student accomplishments is something very frequently seen in SMIC-I School. Whether they are competing in the annual National History Day Competition, to sports accomplishments; students never fail to show their accomplishments. Especially in our sports activities, students take them very seriously. Hours upon hours of dedication is poured into these teams, and no one shows this better than Oscar Su (10B).

Oscar is without a doubt one of SMIC’s most sport-dedicated student in recent years. He has been seen playing on the Volleyball team, Basketball team, and Soccer team. He has never failed to show his worth, whether it be dominating the basketball court, or showing his leadership in guiding the team to victory. While watching his games throughout the ’19-’20 season, Oscar continued to improve him skills and rose his expectations. Without a doubt, those expectations were exceeded quickly, and again more goals were set.

Off the court, he is different to many people. Mavis Goh (10C), whom has been friends with Oscar since the grueling years of Middle School, describes him as a “…[confident] in trying new things.” She talked about how he never shys away from taking on a challenge. “Bold” was another word she used which has been used multiple times to describe him. The student body has quickly fallen in love with Oscar because how could they not! Many students have said his atmosphere and vibe is very enjoyable, and his school spirit is translate by his enthusiasm and leadership. While serving as the president for the Senior Prom Committee, he continued to show his school spirit with his hospitality, taking charge in planning the Prom for the Junior and Seniors. Even though Prom ’20 was cancelled due to the health concerns of COVID-19, he addressed the public with care and sympathy. He expressed his sadness, saying how it’s unfair that seniors should be robbed of their dance. But he also shared his sympathy, saying that he has continued to fight for them to make sure they can end their High School Year with a bang.

Teachers have also shown that they think highly of Oscar, too! Ms. Molly Sternin, a history teacher, had many nice things to say about him. “When I first met Oscar he was a bright-eyed ninth grader who knew nothing about anything, especially in the fields of Leadership and U.S. history. Now he’s a mature, responsible eleventh grader who could probably say a few things to say in both topics.” Being her first student when she came to SMIC in 2017, she has seen him grow and show himself in ways she never thought he would. She later went on to say that he is a “…motivated student who is passionate about not only his education but also…basketball, volleyball, and supporting his friends.” She went on to say that she can see him consistently supporting his friends, never failing to hype them up.

You can’t walk down the hallways without noticing Oscar’s presence. He has impacted the student body for the better, and it’s inspiring to many. Many call him “cool,” “amazing,” “sporty,” and much more. No matter, Ms. Sternin has said he will always be “Swaggy-o.”
