Back to school September updates: events and cancellations

Despite the initial challenges, the 2020–21 school year has successfully gotten off to a smooth start. With the dedication of our faculty members and staff and the support of our parents, the SMIC community is making efforts to help the students enjoy the upcoming semester and maintain their usual activities to the best extent. Now that all students have settled into their new routines and have connected with friends and teachers, the school staff has been swamped with inquiries about this year’s sports events, holidays, and most importantly: The Shark Fiesta. In this article, I would like to give you an update on these events and cancellations.

September 28, next Monday, SMIC would be celebrating our new event: Chinese Day. Anticipating this year’s upcoming National Day Holiday, the school decided to celebrate our Chinese spirit with the new Chinese Day. This is the day to show off your Chinese spirit by wearing red, the color that representing good fortune in China. You can go even further, by wearing traditional Chinese accessories, or hanfu, the traditional Chinese clothing, to school! The school would also be providing free and unique tattoos on the 28th. It is recommended that students and faculty members wear red to show their school spirit. Let’s paint the school red!

Sports Day

This year student-athletes already experienced a tough start amid COVID-19 schedule changes. The volleyball competitions this year, for example, have already been completely cancelled. The good news is that this year’s Sports Day would be held for sure to make up for these sports’ cancellation, under safety regulations by the government.

Certainly, this year’s Sports Day would be different from the previous ones. How will we hold a large event while social distancing? Despite the students’ anticipation, the school has not yet finalized any other details. “A lot of other events are still working out,” responded Daniel Chen (11A), the Student Council secretary. The sports day format is not yet decided. Especially looking at this current pandemic progress, any booths or selling outside food seems improbable at best.

Fortunately, dance and singing club performances would still take place in the opening of the Sports Day. The Dance Club would be performing Wannabe by Itzy, Dynamite by BTS, Ice cream by Blackpink, and Nununana by Jessi. “Please look forward to our performance,” says Irene Zhang (11A), a member of the SMIC Dance Club.
