Varsity girls grow stronger with every game

Crowds of people came to cheer for the Sharks — bleachers were all fully occupied, and some even sat on the ground. As the game proceeded, the atmosphere was heightened with people shouting “Let’s go Sharks, let’s go!” Every time the Varsity Girls scored a point, they cheered with excitement.

On September 15th, the SMIC Varsity Girls’ Volleyball team played against Dulwich College Shanghai (DCW).

Their try-outs started from the first day of school, and all the members in the team had been practicing very hard and getting prepared for the second game in this season.

It was a great game but, in the end, the girls did not win.  However, it is clear that they gave their greatest effort and showed us their potential strength. “I think we did pretty well, since … we still have a lot of new players and it’s only the second game,” stated the team’s co-captain Stephanie Chen (ET12B). “But we could have definitely done better. If the team as a whole [has] better team work and focus in the game.” Though they lost, they improved with each round: the score of the first round was 16:24; and in the last one it was 14:16, an incredibly close score.

The girls sat together to rest after the game ended. At the same time, they discussed what they learned from the game and how to improve. When speaking of the future, Stephanie said, “We can definitely work on the control… [and] just be always prepared to cover for other people.”

“We don’t have a lot of games this season, but I believe we are a very strong team this year,” Stephanie replied with confidence when she was asked about the expectations of the new season, “The new players are definitely strong this time.”
