Twice makes their comeback with a fresh style

South Korean girl band Twice makes their comeback with their seventh mini-album Fancy You on April 22. The album was an immediate success, receiving the most hits on multiple South Korean charts such as MelOn, Genie, Bugs, Mnet, Naver, and Soribada. Additionally, Twice is the first girl band whose album won first place on MelOn’s live chart this year. After the controversial feedback for their previous album Yes or Yes, Twice earned positive reviews from critics for Fancy You.

Twice have always been known for their cuteness since their debut in 2015, but the band changed their public image from sweet and cute to mature and stylish in Fancy You. Park Jin-Young, the founder of JYP Entertainment, describes the leading single “Fancy” as a “mellow mood pop dance track that blends a trendy feel with elegant flute sound.”  In fact, for the first time in their career, Twice chose black as one of their theme colors for their leading single “Fancy”

The band received positive feedback from their audiences in the first several years, but as time went on, fans gradually lost interests in Twice’s never-changing theme of their projects. Even though Twice still produced high-quality music, the band was unfortunately known as the “girl band crowd” as their songs lost their distinguishing and unique style. Thus, Fancy You is a turning point. Many fans describe this album as unconventional, which shows their satisfaction and astonishment with Twice’s new image. The new album helps Twice to achieve their goal of standing out from other groups and reestablishing their dominance as one of the representing K-pop girl bands.

Not only does Twice’s management company encourage the band to change to a new style in their new album, the members are also looking forward to this challenge. Jihyo, one of the nine members of Twice, said, “We have always shown you bright and full-of-energy images but in this album, we want to show you a more mature image.” Most of the members have also participated in writing lyrics for the songs in Fancy You. Jihyo, who had struggled with weight loss at the beginning of her career, wrote “Girls Like Us,” Momo, a dancer since childhood, wrote Hot,” Sana, who views the world from an optimistic perspective, wrote “Turn It Up,” and Chaeyoung, one of the maknae (the youngest in a Korean band), wrote the song “Strawberry.”

Twice has come back with their successful new album, and the future of the group is unpredictable but indeed exciting.
