Science and Technology Fair accomplishes its goal

The Middle High School’s Science and Technology Fair was successfully held on March 14. Dr. Darshana Hegde, the chief organizer of the fair, stated that the goal of the fair was “for everyone to be involved and enjoy science.”

During the Science Fair, three events were held simultaneously: “Science Passport Challenge,” “Science Knowledge Board,” and the “Science Theater.” The “Science Passport Challenge” was an event that was originally going to be held outside, however, due to the unfavorable weather, it was held inside the gymnasium. One experiment took place in each booth, and the MS students observed the experiment and answered the questions given. If answered correctly, they would get a stamp on the passport prepared for them. The group that has the largest number of stamps on their passport won the event.

There were many booth activities. One of the booth’s activities was the “Balloon Skewer” where students tried to penetrate a balloon with a sharpened stick without popping it. The there was the “Magic Floating Ketchup,” where a glob of ketchup was put into a bottle of water, and it sank as the bottle was compressed and floated as it was released. Finally there was the activity “Which Balloon is More Powerful?” where the students learned about equalizing pressure.

The second activity was the “Science Knowledge Board,” a quiz competition that took place in second floor auditorium. This game included three levels: easy, average, and difficult questions. These questions involved important concepts from physics, chemistry, life science, and earth science. The students would answer theses questions to earn points for their group.

The third activity was “Science Theater,” where G9 and G10 students had prepared performances for the MS students. Songs, plays, and even informative talks were performed. After the morning science fair ended, the afternoon Technology fair was held. It began with engineering, business, and product owners’ presentations. Then, videos made by Video Production were presented.

Dr. Hegde commented, “I have always been very impressed with our SMIC students. I think they do their best in whatever they do. They [did] a great job [this] year and everybody participated very well. Next year, I would want the science, as well as non-science students, teachers, and everybody to be involved in this event, participate, and enjoy.”
