Halloween Sleeping Beauty
The actors were acting passionately, seemingly immersed in their roles. Some changed their voice, some danced, and others even shouted to express their character’s unique traits. During October 29th to 30th in the elementary school and middle school locker area, SMIC-I drama club performed “Halloween Sleeping Beauty,” a unique twist on the original fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty.” Although the play was only shown once in each area, the overall quality of the story plot and the acting was admirable.
As the audience watched the performance, they were fascinated not only by the excellent acting skills of the actors but also by the exciting storyline. According to Luke Chong (12A), who is a member of the drama club and the director of this play, the story was about “how a royal family must find someone to break a curse, or else the entire kingdom will be in ruins. The plot is very similar to the original Sleeping Beauty story, except that instead of valuing beauty, the society values ugliness and messiness.”Audiences laughed and were entertained by this exciting story plot in which all the characters want to be ugly.
There were 17 characters in the play, and the main characters were King Rotteninski acted by Andy Zhou, Truly Awful acted by Vicky Zhang, Aunt Hag acted by Elizabeth Jiang, and Prince Reliant acted by Liam Wang. These characters all showed great acting even under the pressure of long lines and an attentive audience. “The play was successful because the storyline was good,” said Rincy Mohan (12B). Luke Chong (12A) also commented that “I think we performed really well. The actors and actresses were fully immersed in their roles. The costumes they wore complemented their characters. The grips were alert and quick when changing sets. The students and teachers responded with cheering and multiple rounds of applause, so I believe we were very successful.” Just like what the club members have said, the play ended successfully. However, there is one thing that the drama club wants to improve in their next plays. “We need a bigger audience. Other than that, I can’t find any faults in our performance,” Luke explained.
Please go and watch the plays provided by the drama club. The members try their best to entertain you!
