Delegates enjoy debate at SMICMUN V

On October 27th, 2018, 9 schools gathered for SMICMUN V. Shanghai American School Pudong (SAS Pudong), Shanghai American School Puxi (SAS Puxi), Nord Anglia International School (NAIS), Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong (Dulwich), Deutsche Schule Shanghai (DSS), Shanghai Community International School (SCIS), Fudan University (Fudan), Harrow International School Shanghai (Harrow), and SMIC Private School (SMIC) came to SMIC to attend this MUN. For an entire day, from 8:00 in the morning to 4:30 in the afternoon around 180 students attended opening ceremonies, conferences, and closing ceremonies. A total of 8 committees were spread throughout the 1st floor A wing, B wing, and 2nd-floor auditorium. Matthew Yang (11A), the chief organizer of the event says, “SMICMUN is where many schools in Shanghai commence their MUN journey for the year. For new delegates, SMICMUN might be their first time exploring the duality of international relations, a narrative of compromise, and the complexity of policymaking. For veterans, SMICMUN is where they use their knowledge and experience to construct a professional and friendly environment. Hosting SMICMUN is especially meaningful to me because I can see the newbies learn and grow in the community. Eventually, they become strong enough to give back to the community, passing on all that they learned to the new generation of delegates.” Timothy Lin (11C), the president of MUN at SMIC, also played a major role in organizing SMICMUN V.

MUN (Model United Nations) is an educational and academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations.  Jason Qiu (12C), one of the delegates who represented the United States for the committee of Historical Security Council (HSC) Romania, said that his experience at SMICMUN V “was phenomenal. SMICMUN expanded my insight into the world. I heard some great discussions and solutions presented to solve the world’s toughest issues. I am eager to see how these people can impact the world in the future.”

SMICMUN involved a lot of people working behind the scenes as well. The administration engaged in making sure that every committee ran smoothly put in a lot of effort. The committees themselves were rather interesting. Delegates would sit around the room in a semi-circle with the two leaders of the committee sitting in the front. Each delegate represented a different country and had to use that country’s data to respond to the topic being addressed. The delegates went through many sessions; at the end of the day, delegates were awarded being the best speaker/contributor and best delegate. Join MUN to gain a fun learning experience of how the world’s government works!
