SMIC-I held the first Career Day

Throughout the past few years, many activities in SMIC-I, such as Sports Day, Shark Fiesta, and International Day were held annually. This year, the school decided to introduce Career Day, an event that has not been practiced in the past, to all middle and high schoolers.

Middle and high school students in SMIC-I had a half day of classes last Saturday, and in the afternoon, it was Career Day. The first part of the event started with Mr. Patrick Carroll sharing a tale of his own journey through many different careers until finally finding his current job. According to Mr. Patrick Carroll, the purpose of the event is “to help kids see that life is an ongoing experience that doesn’t just end after college…” After the introduction, several college students who graduated from SMIC-I in the past shared their high school experiences, how they built their interests, and how they eventually found jobs that suited them.

Workers from a variety of career paths were also invited to Career Day. The special guests included a dentist, therapists, business founders, architects, factory workers, designers, and more.  After the introduction in the auditorium, groups of students rotated around different classrooms to listen to presentations from people of different occupations. By the end of this activity, every class attended five different presentations. Mr. Patrick Carroll said, “We want to expose people to lots of different ideas… People say that they want to be a business man, an engineer, a doctor, but they don’t know anything outside of that, so here is the chance to meet people who do all kinds of very interesting things.”

The majority of the students claimed that Career Day did help with widening their views and providing detailed information.  Career Day is a worthwhile experience and should be repeated again next year.  Next time, it would be better if students could select the presentations they are mostly interested in.

Overall Career Day was successful in that it provided help for middle and high school students who were considering their future career.
