Time for the Summer Youth Olympic Games 2018
Get ready for another exciting Summer Youth Olympic Games event! Argentina hosts this year’s edition of the competition, and the games are being played in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. The event started on October 6th, 2018 and will end on October 18th, 2018. Teenagers from over 200 countries ranging from ages 14 to 18 take the court as they compete against each other in sports such as badminton, basketball, futsal, karate, tennis, and many more. This year’s Youth Olympic Games (YOG) consists of about 4,000 athletes competing in 32 different sports (Wikipedia: 2018 Summer Youth Olympics).
Eight medal finals and two semi-final rounds in various swimming competitions such as the Men’s 100 Back Final and the Women’s 200 Fly Final have already occurred (SwimmingWorldMagazine). At the time of writing, Russia is leading the competition with 11 gold medals, followed by Hungary and Colombia in second and third place, respectively (Wikipedia: 2018 Summer Youth Olympics). Thousands of youth players have traveled around the world to Buenos Aires to compete with others in the sport that they specialize. Some exciting sports events in this year’s competition include futsal and dancesport.
Futsal is a sport where two teams of five players play in an enclosed stadium. The game is very similar to soccer, but with a much smaller playing field. The objective is the same as soccer: to get the ball into the net using only your feet. It maintains the same restriction of not using hands to handle the ball as soccer. (Wikipedia: Futsal).
Dancesport is competitive ballroom dancing, as compared to social or exhibition dancing. In this sport, dancers dance gracefully across the dance floor, exhibiting their skill to their judges. Due to the formality of ballroom dancing, all dancers and judges dress formally and elegantly, making viewers stare in awe of their attire and prowess. In the case of wheelchair dancesport, at least one of the dancers is in a wheelchair (Wikipedia: Dancesport).
These are just some exciting events that some people may not have heard before. If the Summer Youth Olympic Games 2018 catches your attention, feel free to go check out all the different competitions and sporting events hosted in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
