Elementary School takes Spirit Week to the next level

The third week of March was special for the Elementary School students, not just because of the warm spring weather, but also because of Spirit week. Throughout the week, students showcased their costumes with creativity and excitement around the campus. For each spirit day, ES Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) parents toured around classrooms and voted on the best-dressed person and on the homeroom that participated the most. By making the event competitive, many students were very eager to participate in all the events throughout the week.

With excitement among the students, the week began with Monday’s Shark Spirit Day. Students and teachers were either dressed in school uniforms or shark-related costumes to show their school pride. Then, Tuesday was Year of the Dog Day, which was particularly unique because it offered students to celebrate the year of 2018 by dressing up as dogs.

On Wednesday March 14, they celebrated Pi (3.14) Day by wearing costumes related to either the pi number, math, or science. The ES Math Department was in charge of the event, and they hosted the traditional Pi Day event where the winners of various math competitions earned the chance to throw a pie at a teacher. Moreover, some teachers incorporated the theme of Pi Day into their lessons. For example, in Ms. Sue Su’s 1E Chinese class, students shared stories of famous mathematicians with their classmates to celebrate the day.

Students greeted the next morning with Twin Day, a day where students match their outfit to look like twins. They did not just simply wear matching colors but prepared identical costumes that reflected their own personalities and interests. Teachers also actively joined the event by “twinning” with each other, enhancing the spirit and enthusiasm of Twin Day for everyone.

The last day of Spirit Week was Career Day. Previously, this day was an independent event where parents would go around each classroom and give brief presentations about different jobs. This year, Mrs. Danielle Ma’u and co-organizers expanded Career Day to include two events. The first event took place in the MHS second-floor auditorium, with parents or professionals from different fields presenting about their jobs and responsibilities. By organizing the event in such way, the students were not just lectured about careers in their classrooms but were provided more freedom to explore around and ask questions to the presenters. “[The event] was really good. The kids were so engaged because it was a little more comfortable,” Mrs. Ma’u agreed.

The highlight of Career Day, though, took place in the afternoon. Our district’s police and fire department visited the school. “They brought a truck, a big saw, oxygen masks, and a big hose. The police department showcased their tools. They [also] let them hear the sirens,” Mrs. Ma’u said excitedly. With these two great events, Career Day marked the end of a fruitful and exciting Spirit Day.
