Art Club upgrades school doors and boosts campus aesthetics

What is the first thing you see upon entering a department office or classroom? It’s not the layout of the room, the wallpaper, or the people inside, but the door. Before entering any room here on campus, we are greeted by the grey-painted door, which is often austere and not decorated. However, changes have occurred. Many departments such as PE, Math, and English as well as a few homerooms decorated their doors with customized designs. The changes were the results of the Art Club’s recent project, led by club president Joanne Huang (9B) and advisor Ms. Irina Edwards.

Starting the beginning of the semester, middle and high school members in Art Club have been working hard for the community. “Over 20 students are involved, with 2 doors on average being assigned to each student,” explained Ms. Edwards. “Art club meets Thursdays after school and that is the main working time, however, many spent additional hours making sure to complete the doors.” The project is still in progress, with the first round being just recently completed and the second round assignments of lab doors currently taking place. Approximately 26 doors are scheduled to be finished this second round. Art club plans on continuing this project for as long as there are requests by school teachers and staff.

The main purpose of this project was multi-dimensional. “Art club decided to decorate the doors because we want to beautify the school environment and bring the sense of art into everyday life… Also, this is a great way for the members in our club to practice both art skills and communication skills since they also have to discuss with the teachers that applied for the door decoration,” said Joanne. The club also believes that the doors of classrooms and offices are often neglected and therefore decided to take this opportunity to give to the community and demonstrate creativity. Jesse Zhang (12C) commented, “They’re done so well they distract me [in class].”

As for future plans, Joanne says that they are not fully planned out due to the large amount of effort and time it takes to complete the doors. However, for the next school year, Art Club hopes to hold an exhibition of individual art projects completed by students over the summer. The purpose of this project would be “for the members to develop creativity and show individualism and independence.”

Art club meets on Thursdays after school from 3:30 to 4:30 P.M. in the art room. If you are interested in practicing your art skills and creativity, you can join the club and partake in their projects that aim to improve campus aesthetics.
