Student Council announces Winter Formal 2018: Interstellar

SMIC-I Student Council presents this year’s highly anticipated Winter Formal theme: Interstellar.

Recently, student council announced that the 2018 Interstellar Winter Formal will take place on December 15, from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM, at the “Fun Bar” or the DNA Café. This SMIC-I event is popular among students, and tickets are sold throughout the month of December and even at the doors of reception. The head coordinator of Winter Formal, StuCo president Michael Lee (12C) stated, “unlike previous years’ events, the key point of the 2018 Winter Formal is that it’s going to be catered a lot towards singles, and it’s going to be like a hype night club.” Tickets will be sold by student council members throughout the school day for 120RMB for singles and 230RMB for couples during the early bird period, and 140RMB and 270RMB for the regular period. Tickets would also be sold at the door for 160RMB and 310RMB for singles and couples respectively.

While the majority of juniors anticipate getting formally dressed and glammed-up, many seniors seemed reluctant to go due to Early Action and Decision college acceptance letters. Senior Vicky Zhang (12B) commented that she will decide whether or not to go on the day of Winter Formal depending on her mood after receiving her ED decision. However, a few look forward to the event to reunite with the alumni who will also attend. According to Inque Park (12B), “the afterparty is what we’re here for with the alumni.”

Michael further explained the process of organizing this event: “we took in account the location of the venue, and we decided on [the Fun Bar] because it was in the middle of West Nanjing Road, a busy street filled with fun things to do for afterparties. Also, the venue itself had met the requirements; we knew that this one seemed ‘fun,’and we wanted to somewhat make the bar a night-club vibe; we have student DJs and many singing performances, a foosball table, darts, photobooths, and lounging rooms. I’m most excited about the hype dance, and hope that many students will attend so that it will be successful.” The food and drinks will be provided by the venue, DNA Café, in small cakes and other desserts that the café specializes in.
